Today I will work on a portrait. It’s my fourth or fifth rendition. The subject is an artist that I’ve known for 30 years. I’ve never spent much time with him, but I know him to be very creative and shy. I’m trying to reconcile the need to portray his creative vitality and his apparent calm. Secondly, I’d like to surround him with some elements of his beloved New Orleans…This is a tough job, but I love the challenge.
